Cambodia’s tourism industry, heavily reliant on Chinese visitors, is facing a significant setback due to its association with online scam syndicates.
The country’s reputation as a hub for cyberscam groups that traffic people into forced labor has damaged its standing among Chinese tourists, hindering efforts to revive the vital tourism sector post-pandemic.
Despite the government’s attempts to tackle the illicit industry and attract Chinese visitors through certification programs, the presence of unaddressed scam compounds and the release of a blockbuster film highlighting the issue have further tarnished Cambodia’s image in China.
This negative perception, coupled with a lack of action against corruption and organized crime, is deterring Chinese tourists and impacting tourism revenue.
